5 Rustic Kitchens that Will Wow You!
“Rustic” is one of those terms that carry different meanings for different people. One person might think of a rural countryside design, and another may have thoughts of a kitchen with a plain and simple design.
However, whatever your definition of rustic may be, the following five kitchens are anything but plain and simple. The rustic kitchen design trend is one that never goes out of style, so enjoy the following pictures and gather some ideas for your dream kitchen.
Ye Olde Rustic Castle Kitchen
We can all agree that there is nothing plain about this design. Every detail and decision about this rustic kitchen was carefully considered, down to the orange mosaic tile backsplash behind the faucet near the range. While the backsplash might look out of place at first, it actually works well because the accessories on the shelves on either side of the custom range hood match it in color and tone.
The same can be said for the blue chairs at the marble island table. At first, they may seem out of place, but they bring out the contrast in the marble. And if you look closer, there is a blue chair in the back of the photo that pulls everything in line.
One of the most popular kitchen design trends is to mix textures and materials, and you can see that in play in this picture. The varied textures and materials work well together because they all share a common element: history. These are all historical materials reminiscent of bygone centuries. And when used together, it’s quite stunning.
There is a trick to successfully using different textures, materials, and even colors. Anything you use in kitchen decor must share at least one common element, whether it be color, pattern, time period, or anything else. If the elements you use all share this common feature, it’ll work.
The incredible range hood is bathed in copper, with shiny trim and rivets around it. It might seem odd that the metal of choice for the range is not also copper; however, another design trend for kitchens is the use of different metals and finishes, and it works very well here.
The dark wooden floor mirrors the ceiling beams above, and as a regal finishing touch, the wall sconces and chandeliers are of an old-world dark rustic finish that doesn’t detract attention away from everything else.
Modern Rustic Elegance
One of the main features of any rustic kitchen is the use of natural materials, whether it be wood, stone, or otherwise. This room is an interesting one because it’s unusual to find a predominantly white rustic kitchen. However, this space pulls it off nicely.
You can see the use of stone on the island, both in its base and its countertop. The counters along the wall are also stone, and the wood detail is present in the gorgeous floor and in the bar chairs. The lighter tone for the flooring is a great choice.
Even though hardwood floors are often a darker shade, this lighter one blends the neutral colors of the rest of the space together without causing a disruption of the room’s flow from top to bottom.
The overall neutral gray tones throughout this kitchen provide a happy medium between all-white and too dark. It’s light enough that the room is nice and bright, but not so bright that it appears washed out.
The kitchen design trend of using different metal finishes in the room has been done exceptionally well here. The large range is stainless steel, and so is the stunning custom range hood that hangs above it. The faucet at the island looks to be the same finish, which complements the overall gray tone of the room perfectly.
However, the other metal that is used in this rustic kitchen is brass. The knobs on the range, the hands of each pendant light above the island, and the rivets and straps on the range hood are all brass. The cabinet and drawer handles continue this theme of brass throughout the room.
The choice for the lighting over the island is an interesting one. The glass covers over the bulb on each pendant don’t just draw attention to them but also to the glass-doored cabinets on the main wall of the room. It’s one of those small details that makes a big difference.
The Dark Side and the Light Side of Rustic
There’s no denying that this kitchen is likely the busiest, most popular room in the house! There are several rustic elements in this design that are just stunning. There are also several contemporary elements, which, strangely enough in this rustic kitchen, don’t look the least bit out of place.
The bright stainless steel finish of the wall ovens isn’t considered to be a rustic finish. Even though we can’t really see the range, dishwasher, or refrigerator (which may be behind the doors on the right), we might assume those appliances are likely stainless as well.
The reason they don’t appear awkward in such a rustic kitchen is the dominating white cabinetry throughout the space, the recessed lighting in the ceiling, and the large windows on the far walls. All of these elements play favorably to the stainless steel in the room since they all are nice and bright.
A huge kitchen design trend as of late is using unexpected contrasts, whether it be contrasting colors, materials, or metals. The most obvious example of contrast in this kitchen is the amazing antique-looking dark-stained island, which contrasts sharply with the white cabinetry all around.
However, it works well because these elements all have a similar rustic design to them. The deep rustic-style floor is an amazing choice that sets the tone for the entire room, and it’s complemented beautifully by the brick wall at the back of the kitchen.
Continuing the color theme of the flooring and the brick wall is a gorgeous copper range hood, which also features lights that shine over the sink. The lights are similar to those used as under-cabinet lighting around the entire counter space, which continues the flow of light around the entire back wall.
To finish it all off, the incredible chandelier above the island is also copper, and so too are the pendant lights that shine over the faucet to the left. Continuing the copper tone is the farmhouse-style sink, bringing together all of the rustic details from one end of the room to the other.
Sleek Steel with a Touch of the Mediterranean
The deep tone of the wood used in this rustic kitchen is what the term “rustic” is all about. One of the best qualities of rustic kitchens, especially those that are drenched in luxurious deep tones, is that they draw you in with an inviting atmosphere.
This kitchen is a blend of rustic beauty and Italian elegance. For instance, the Italian marble of the countertops is an unusual marble that includes touches of blue.
Another noteworthy addition is the custom copper range hood with an ornate (and very fitting) design that almost mimics the swirls in the marble. The drawer pulls and cupboard knobs are a dark finish that complements the dark copper hood. The faucet at the island sink is also copper.
This rustic kitchen also has followed the trend of mixing metals. Even though the hood has a gorgeous copper finish, the cooktop is sleek stainless steel, as well as the wall ovens to the left. One of the reasons for choosing stainless steel may have been to prevent the room from being overly dark since there doesn’t appear to be a lot of natural light (except for a window out of the frame to the right).
Another highlight of this kitchen is the windowed scenic panel above the cooktop. This is the heart of the whole Mediterranean/Italian vibe of the room, with its gorgeous depiction of a canal (Venice, perhaps?), flanked by decorative shutters on both sides.
One of the most clever things about this kitchen is that the blue in the marble is complemented by the blue in the aforementioned scenic windowed panel. This one feature is gorgeous enough that it brings the entire room together by carrying a beautiful blue all of the way from the panel to the counters and over to the island.
The Old World and the New
Few rustic kitchens we’ve seen have taken the trend of mixing metals and mastered it as well as it’s done here. If you remember, the rustic design is created by natural elements, and this kitchen has many. It features wood and stone in the flooring and the stone wall, for example.
The contrast and the mixing of metals are evident with the stainless steel ovens, the stainless steel cooktop, and the copper range hood. This was deliberately (and brilliantly) done for a reason, and these finishes were chosen to complement their surroundings.
The stainless steel is a much brighter finish than copper. Likewise, the white cabinetry near the stainless steel is also much brighter than the stone that surrounds the copper. This is why mixing these two metal finishes this way works so well: they both complement what’s around them.
The same is true for the shelving brackets on the stone wall, as well as the pot-filler faucet. Everything is complementary to the magnificent range hood so as not to disrupt the flow of that upper wall.
One other note about the range hood: Notice that it’s the same depth and width as the cooktop below it. It’s important that your range hood is the same width as your cooktop or range in order to thoroughly rid the air of cooking contaminants. Plus, it looks better when they are the same width!
There are no chandeliers or even pendant lights in view, and the recessed lighting on the ceiling was a good choice. There’s already a lot going on in this room design-wise, so even the simplest chandelier or pendant light might push the design over the top. Recessed lighting provides much-needed light in rooms without taking up any visual real estate, making them ideal for rooms with heavy, busy, or many textures.
Consider Rustic for a Classic Take on Modern Trends
When it comes to rustic kitchen design trends, remember to focus on natural-looking materials like stone and wood. Complete the look with natural finishes, such as wrought iron and copper. Mix in some stainless steel for some unexpected contrast if you like, and you’ll have a kitchen you’ll love for years to come.
