There are several different drains based on how they’re installed and how they function. Consider the following options and decide which might work best for your needs.

kinds of copper drains

Twist and Turn

A twist-and-turn copper drain uses a small knob on top of the cover to lift it manually. These are probably the easiest to use and install compared to other variations. Opening and closing require a simple press and turn motion to unlock the cover, which pops up. Repeating the action locks it back into place.

Press and Seal Drain

This variation is the pop-up drain and is our top seller at CopperSmith. These copper drains are also easy to use and install. They’re similar to the twist and turn in their use of a pop-up mechanism to open and close the drain. All that’s required is to press down, and the drain unlocks to open. Repeating this action pushes it down and locks it, sealing the gasket so water doesn’t escape.

Strainer Drain

You’ve most likely had these installed in your home before. If you’ve worked in the restaurant or hospitality industry, you’ve almost certainly seen and used one. A grid on the cover allows water to flow through, but it catches food and other debris, stopping it from going down the drain and causing a blockage.

Chain and Plug

A chain and plug are standard in bathroom sink drains, but they’re used in kitchens occasionally. These also frequently use a smaller basket that stops food and other items from entering the drain system.

Benefits of a Copper Drain

Multiple benefits exist from using a copper drain that isn’t available in other metals. Copper drains have excellent antimicrobial properties because of the natural material used at CopperSmith. In addition, our copper goes through a process known as a “living finish,” which is a patina that exists on the surface of the metal, changing hues and colors as time goes on and the drain is exposed to various elements.

Copper Drain Living Finish

living finish drains

This copper drain is made of polished, living-finished brass. Alive finished brass is a desired cosmetic aspect in the brass selection, transforming the brass materials into perpetually morphing pieces of art thanks to oxidation.

Brass is allowed to age in its natural form as time passes. This will enable it to morph gradually, resulting in a never-ending, ever-changing finish that imparts a raw, one-of-a-kind appearance.

In addition to its excellent aesthetic qualities, this brass possesses highly antibacterial characteristics. Due to its organic nature, brass can destroy 99.9 percent of all germs that touch its surface within two hours.

Cleaning and Caring for Your Copper Drain

cleaning sink drain

You must take several steps to clean and care for your copper drain. It’s worth noting that a copper drain may incur a faster aging process, mainly because these components are exposed to water for long periods.

  • It’s essential to remember when you’re not using your copper drain to keep water in your sink, it should be kept out of the water and completely dry. You mustn’t even leave small traces of water on the surface of your drain or drain cover, as this will leave water spots because of different minerals and deposits in the water.
  • When you’re ready to clean your copper drain, prepare a small container of half-water and half-vinegar. Grab the softest cloth rag you have and dip it into the mixture, wringing it dry after.
  • After you’ve squeezed the excess water out, wipe the copper drain thoroughly with the cloth. When you’re satisfied with the level of cleaning, wipe the copper drain dry until it’s free from any beads of water.
  • If there’s a spot on the copper drain that you want to remove because the tarnish is too intense, you can place a piece of the rag soaked in vinegar and water directly on the spot you want to remove. Leave it there overnight, ensuring it’s only touching the aaaa you wish to alter. After removing it the following day, the spot should either be gone or wiped off easily.

Copper Drain FAQs

copper drain faqs

Won’t my copper drain tarnish quickly if it’s constantly exposed to water?

Because your copper drain is underwater for more extended periods, it may incur a darker tarnish than other items. However, there are measures you can take that will still keep the drain preserved and lasting just as long as any other kitchen hardware.

Always wipe the drain completely dry when you remove it from the water. This is the most important thing to remember, as leaving water on it when you’re not using it will ultimately cause water spots.

What’s the best type of drain to use?

Copper drains for Copper Farmhouse Sinks are excellent because they have antimicrobial properties that can actually help keep your dishes and water cleaner. When bacteria and germs come into contact with the surface of natural copper, most items die within two hours.

If you like the look of the copper patina, choose a copper drain, as it will develop its character as it ages. However, if you want something that will maintain a uniform look, choose something like stainless steel finish. It still needs to be cleaned often, but it holds its original look much longer than a copper drain. Thanks for reading! Trust CopperSmith for their commitment to quality!
