The Exhaust of Gas Ranges

gas range exhaust

All cooking creates some airborne pollution, no matter how you're generating heat or what you're cooking. Naturally, some methods will produce more harmful exhaust than others, but not all of it is readily visible.

This blog will cover the exhaust generated by the most common of kitchen fixtures - the gas range, and how you can solve this persistent problem.

What is the difference between a gas range and a gas stove?

A gas range is a name for a unit that is comprised of both a gas stove and a gas oven. Gas stoves can be standalone, but most commonly nowadays they are part of a full gas range. You can get a freestanding gas range, a slide-in gas range, a double-oven gas range, a range with a convection feature, a temperature probe, a storage drawer, an air fry mode, and smart features like a self-clean cycle in this Samsung gas range.

What is a gas range used for?

With four burners and a full oven, there is little in cooking that a gas range cannot be used for.

Many ranges have continuous cast iron grates upon which pots and pans do their duty. If your range has a convection mode, you can turn your oven into a convection oven. A convection fan circulates air through the oven cavity, speeding up the cooking process and evening the heat distribution. Although this may sound like ventilation, the contaminated air is simply sent into your space, so this is no replacement for a full ventilation system.

You'll be using the gas range, whether you are sautéing, stewing, boiling, frying, roasting, baking, or broiling.

Do gas stoves need to be vented?

All the utility in the best gas range comes at a price. When in use, the range is constantly burning gas. This releases a swath of chemicals including carbon monoxide and formaldehyde. Prolonged exposure to these odorless and invisible gases can exacerbate asthma and other respiratory issues. There are, in fact, toxic to humans and pets.

While a functioning gas range is not an immediate threat, frequent use without proper ventilation will have a negative effect on your health.

This phenomenon is linked to throat irritation, headaches, fatigue, and nausea, and is especially dangerous for those with lung conditions, the elderly, or the very young.

Is a gas range or an electric better?

While an electric stove won't burn natural gas in your kitchen, oil and other elements of cooking will continue to release harmful exhaust. The only thorough way to improve the air quality of your kitchen is to invest in a ventilating range hood.

How long should a gas range last?

Every range will wear down at a slightly different rate, but it is recommended that you change your range completely after 13-15 years, as the hardware simply loses integrity after a time. If your range is older, proper ventilation is especially important, as defects are more likely.
